Stations should be placed at least 6 feet apart and no more than 10 people may be in the salon at any given time. Larger salons will have to implement some kind of rotating schedule to accommodate all stylist while maintaining these rules.
All salons must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before opening even if they were cleaned before they closed. Cloth furniture should be covered in plastic, all unnecessary items such as magazines, service menus, paper products, drink stations, candy dishes, samples, and decor should be removed. Clean towels and linens should be stored in an inclosed container. Dirty towels and linens should also be stored in an inclosed container. Disinfectant for the immersion of tools must be remixed daily and replaced sooner if it becomes contaminated so be prepared to change it multiple times a day. Also it won’t work unless you wash your tools with soap and water first. Stations, tools, credit card readers and wash sinks must be cleaned and disinfected between each client. Front desks, bathrooms, entry areas, trash cans, and door knobs/handles must be disinfected throughout the day. Stylists must wash hands before and after each service.
Salons can only take clients by appointment. Establishment ms that operate on a walk in bases will have to create some kind of number or check in system. ALL clients must remain outside the salon, preferably in their vehicles until notified that they may enter the salon. Only clients and stylists will be allowed in the salon. All others must remain outside the establishment.
Temperature checks, while optional, are strongly recommended. Anyone (client or employee) with a temperature of 99 degrees or higher will be sent home and not allowed to return until no fever and no Covid-19 symptoms are present. Stylists are required to ask each client a medical history before service can begin.
All stylists and employees are required to wear a face mask at all times. Face shields and safety goggles are recommended. Clients should also wear a face mask or be provided a clean towel to cover their mouth and nose throughout the service. Each client must be draped in a clean disinfected cape. Capes must be disinfected using either a spray or wipe and left to set per manufacturer recommendations. A protective neck strip or clean towel should be placed around the neck and under the cape of each client. Employees must arrive at work showered and wearing clean clothing and are recommended to change clothes before leaving the salon each day.
Oklahoma still hasn’t had the recommended 2 week decline in new cases and still doesn’t have the proper testing procedures in place.
Many of us don’t even have the choice to stay home if we don’t feel safe. Lots of stylist and salon owners were never approved for the unemployment, small business loans, or grants that the CARE act promised. And those that did manage to get approval will lose those safety nets now that we have been allowed to reopen. We have been left in a situation where a lot of us have to choose to either go back to work or stay home and go under.
But don’t worry, it’s safe to reopen.
